The environmental issue that we chose to address in our project consists of global warming and climate change. Global warming is an environmental issue where the Earth’s temperature gradually rises due to the release of excessive green-house gases, primarily in the form of carbon dioxide. Consequently, this increase in temperature affects the blooming patterns of plants. By providing a warmer climate for plants to thrive in, global warming causes plants to bloom earlier in the spring and it allows them to survive longer in the fall (EPA). Due to a concern for the environment, our team’s goals for the Air and Climate Challenge consist of devising multiple projects in an effort toward conducting research about the blooming patterns of plants, educating the public about environmental conservation, and restoring plants to their native habitats. We will do this by restoring a native garden at our school, writing lesson plans to teach students about the effects of invasive species on ecosystems, analyzing blooming patterns of plants affected by global warming, forming partnerships with various environmental organizations, and by informing the public about our projects through the use of various social media outlets.
